A Photographer's Self-Promotion Pep Talk - May 5, 2011

In this day and age, photographers, like all small businesses, have endless, easily accessible tools at their disposal that can be used for highly effective self-promotion. Whether you are a veteran to the commercial photography industry, a recent graduate or a self-taught artist, this workshop is meant to inspire you by taking the doom out of the current commercial photography gloom. They say times are tough, but losing your fear of success and of the unknown is half of the battle to paving your way back to making money doing what you love. This workshop will reflect on the basics of creating a strong foundation for your business that includes sound financial practices and marketing strategies. We will discuss how to create efficiencies in your current or future promotional efforts, provide insight on the do's and don'ts of negotiating and estimating and how to create a bold, consistent brand that will glean the attention of a targeted audience.

Angela Mateus, Managing Partner of Artists Creative Agency, is a long time industry professional who offers a unique perspective on the commercial photography business from having worked on multiple sides of the client/vendor table as a photographers' rep, print producer, photo art director and art buyer. The format of her workshops encourages participation and input from attendees. The forum she facilitates and fosters permits those present to exchange ideas with fellow colleagues and promotes the flow of professional dialogue surrounding the positives and negatives impacting the current climate of the commercial photography business.

Social Media for Photographers - May 24, 2011

Social Media has quickly changed the way people communicate and do business. If you're like most photographers you have Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts and maybe you've done a bit of blogging, but you haven't figured out how this fits into your marketing plan. You're not alone, long established media and advertising businesses were caught off guard as social media revolutionized their industry. Staying informed, making a plan and taking action is essential for anyone running a business in this new environment. In this presentation I will help you make sense of how these new tools work, show you photographers who are finding success with social media and inspire you to take action.

Rob Haggart is founder of the popular photo industry blog APhotoEditor.com and 2009 recipient of the Griffin Museum of Photography Focus Award for Rising Star, awarded to an "emerging force the photographic community is watching with interest."

He has received photo editing recognition from Graphis, American Photography, Society of Publication Designers, Communication Arts, American Society of Magazine Editors, Photo District News, and was chosen as part of the creative team of the year by Ad Week. ASMP National News

Judge Denny Chin issued an opinion rejecting the proposed settlement agreement in the Authors' Guild class action against Google. The 48-page decision finds that the proposed settlement agreement is not "fair, adequate and reasonable". The Judge points to changing the basic approach of the proposed settlement from an "opt out" to an "opt in" system as a way to resolve most of the objections to and defects of the settlement proposal. The result of this decision was one that ASMP had been anticipating, and we have been planning accordingly. ASMP is analyzing the details of the decision right now, and you can find a copy of it at online.
