Psihoyos, of Boulder, had a long still photography career before signing on to direct 2009's Best Documentary, The Cove, about the capture and killing of wild dolphins in a hidden cove in Japan.
Many years at National Geographic and a brilliant career as an editorial shooter primed Louie to dive into something even more important: The turbulent seas of ecology and animal rights.
